ABSTRACT
Over the past 50 years tourism has become a major activity in our society and an increasingly important sector in terms of economic development, mainly as a result of income increase and improvements in transport systems. Tourism though is not only a rapidly rising economic activity, on all continents, in both countries and regions, but also a growth sector which may have increasingly many adverse effects on environmental quality (Giaoutzi and Nijkamp, 1994).
