ABSTRACT

Tourism history as it appears m much (Western) literature is largely concerned with the activities of the affluent, which occur in particular tourism settings such as resorts or on luxury tours. Originally, these forms of tourism were special events, which occurred periodically in people's lives. It all began with the leisured elites of ancient Greece and Rome, the re-emergence of tourism in the Renaissance, and the development of spas and Grand Tours in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In the nineteenth century, tourism was heavily affected by the advent of the train and in the twentieth century by the jet aeroplane and charter flights.
