ABSTRACT

John Masefield About the Thomas Hardy model. It is a dreadful thing: but in talk once TH said that as a little boy he had longed for a model & had never had one; so I asked if I might try to make him one; so I tried to make ‘The Triumph, the new-rigged ship’, of the old song he quotes somewhere (in a poem).1 It looked quite gay when new, but I was a wretched hand at tools at the best. I blush to see it now, but I think TH was pleased: & that is much to remember (p. 114).2
