ABSTRACT

George Gissing Sat. Sept. 14. Fine. Went up to Waterloo, and by the 2.25 to Dorchester, arriving ¾ hour late. Hardy to meet me at the station. Found he had his publisher, McIlvaine staying with him – a very young man, and seemingly rather dull-witted.1 Pleasant house, in garden which has not yet had time to mature. Signs of easy circumstances, but cooking of course bad. Mrs Hardy a foolish, unrestful person, and disagreeable in face. Slept well.
