Sir J.G. Frazer The eminent novelist, Mr Thomas Hardy, was once informed that the reason why certain trees in front of his house, near Dorchester, did not thrive, was that he looked at them before breakfast on an empty stomach. Mr Hardy told me this himself (pp. 64-5).
