ABSTRACT
Sir Henry Newbolt Hardy had not a scientific but a poetic nature, and he was ready in case of necessity to build on foundations of feeling, if nothing else could support his tentative philosophy. He told me that my first article1 had convicted him of injustice to ‘the Will’, the Power which ‘has woven with an absent heed Since life first was’,2 and which lays suffering on men while it denies them free will. And later still he drew my attention to the lines in the After-scene in which he makes the Pities bring hope into the darkness of the world – the Inadvertent Mind may ‘gain cognition’ as man has done, so that the rages of the ages
Shall be cancelled, and deliverance offered from the darts that were, Consciousness the Will informing, till It fashion all things fair!3
