Sometimes the questions he put to me were, I fancied, endeavours to discover what were the tendencies of public opinion, and the views of the younger generation upon questions of the day. Possibly he asked me because I was moving about the world more than he, and Dorchester might, at that time, have been described as something of a ‘backwater’.
