ABSTRACT
No contrast could be greater among Byzantine warrior saints than that between Phanourios and Arethas (XII). The central facts about Arethas are well established: the date and place of his birth, the circumstances of his martyrdom, the place where his relics were deposed. For Phanourios, nothing is recorded except posthumous miracles, which, it seems, Arethas did not perform.
