ABSTRACT

No hagiographical text for the Holy Five of Sebasteia has survived earlier in date than their Metaphrastic Life.1 However, one or more Passions certainly existed. The Metaphrastic Life incorporates the Testament of their leader Eustratius, which provided for the construction of a basilica in their honour at Arauraka, whither their relics were translated from Sebasteia, the place of their martyrdom.2 It has long been recognized that this Testament depends on that of the XL Martyrs.3
