ABSTRACT

The attention of Turkic scholars has turned especially to Turkic tribal names. Thus the Turkish scholar Abdulkader Inan presented a large collection of Turkic tribal names to the Turkish Historical Commission, while in the XXI International Conference of Oriental Scholars in Paris the Hungarian Turkic scholar J. Nemeth gave his paper of the types of Turkic tribal names. A deeper insight into the actual usage of the Turkic languages, however, teaches us that the situation is much more complex in reality than it would have appeared at first sight. In order to determine the number more closely, Turkic languages have always had particular, independent words, be they actual numerals or else related words expressing an approximate number such as 'much', 'little', 'some', 'several', etc, which would be prefixed, and less frequently suffixed, to the noun.
