ABSTRACT
It has often been said that the great flowering of commercial relations between the Mediterranean and the empire of Chinggis Khan’s successors was a consequence of the Pax Mongolica, and of the resulting security and freedom of communication across central Asia. These facts are correct, but only part of the explanation.
