ABSTRACT

Dispositions are tendencies. Tendencies tend to have characteristic manifestations – distinctive initiating circumstances and outcomes. The distinctive outcome is a loss of structural integrity. In the case of safety, some use of the safe thing is the initiating circumstance and the outcome is an absence of harm by the thing. In the case of transparency, impinging light initiates and the outcome is its undistorted transmission. That is, we have an antecedent condition that makes true the necessitiation of the material conditional: It is what makes this material conditional necessarily true that ensures that the 'cheating' counterfactual is also true. It is possible to give up the virtue ethical approach to right action that derives most straightforwardly from the core of virtue ethics. This chapter also discusses a current counterfactual construction that has gotten virtue theory into serious trouble.
