ABSTRACT
In this chapter we start with general considerations about the predictive power of models in the social sciences which is a necessary prerequisite for effectively addressing long-term issues such as the consequences of certain welfare reforms and benefits of investing in human capital formation. Society expects the social sciences to address such issues explicitly and develop an understanding of social and economic mechanisms that allow an effective intervention in order to move toward desirable outcomes.
