ABSTRACT

This chapter has a problematic issue to confront, in so far as the relationships involved – between the providers, audiences, perceived responsibilities and possible modes of use of online journalism as a still very young and unprecedented phenomenon – are undergoing rapid and often unpredictable change. For this reason, it is not easy to fit it within the overall structure of the book’s three core questions. In so far as they can be presently examined, issues relating to these questions have already been discussed in the Internet section of Chapter 2. While additional relevant issues will be raised here, the main emphasis will be on trying to discern some of the potential ways in which the online environment might impact on journalism in the foreseeable future and to identify the implications for democracy wherever possible.
