ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the International Civil Aviation Organization Air Traffic Management (ATM) work programme along with ATM developments taking place around the world. It examines the various elements of the ATM system and some of the research, trials and demonstrations being conducted. A general objective of ATM is to enable aircraft operators to meet their planned times of departure and arrival and adhere to their preferred flight profiles with minimum constraints without compromising agreed levels of safety. Attaining the goal of an integrated, global air traffic management system, requires harmonization and standardization of regional and national system elements of equipment and procedures. The envisaged ATM system will consist of several subelements; these are: flight operations, Airspace management, Air Traffic Services and Air Traffic Flow Management. Airspace management is traditionally recognized mainly as involving a dynamic or tactical sharing of airspace by civil and military users.
