ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in this book. The books reveals that the landscape of conscription is less homogenous and clear cut than is typically assumed when conscription is presented as an outmoded system, soon to be history. It shows the centrality of gender issues in the Swedish translation of the 'crisis of conscription', and the significance and centrality of a gender-sensitive response to this crisis particular by the armed forces. The book presents the national lexica of conscription and discusses how they translate 'the crisis of conscription'. Finland has done the least to reform its conscription system, Germany and Norway have reluctantly engaged in a reform process, while Sweden and especially Denmark are clearly heading towards what the introduction termed a 'neo-conscription' system. The national lexica of conscription in Sweden and Denmark display a considerable degree of flexibility both in terms of their understanding of universality and in terms of how they view education.
