ABSTRACT

This chapter will attempt to explore a theme in Owen’s writings that is, arguably, one of the most prominent in his entire corpus: the priesthood of Christ. it is a theme whose significance is evident at the start of Owen’s theological career, whose importance in his thinking remained unabated throughout the course of his life, and one that obtained the most elaborate treatment exegetically and theologically toward the end of his life. There are, therefore, vast grounds that could be covered. This chapter will, however, be confined to an exploration of the subject through the lens of a particular formulation of Owen on the priesthood of Christ. Owen’s formulation may be stated as follows: the oblation and intercession of Christ performed in his state of humiliation and exaltation. in the first part of this chapter, the development of Owen’s formulation will be examined briefly in a selected number of his writings. The second part of this chapter will probe the significance of Owen’s formulation for his atonement theology in the context of his debate with Richard Baxter.
