ABSTRACT

Sometimes, oil and tempera paintings are more laboriously constructed on paper, or on quickly carved linoleum plates. They result from innumerable layers of thick colour applied with miniscule brushes and allude more solemnly to the permanence of place, of memory and durable types and archetypes of human habitat. They also force slowness onto the painting process and this slowness has the pace of meditation and of thinking. It enhances inner peace and exhilarates the joy of making, the delight of crafting. Napkin sketches and paintings are wonderfully inspiring drafts for sketchbook elaborations and more refined capriccio paintings.
