ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses collection are the fruit of a conference devoted to the study of medieval technology sponsored by the Center for Medieval Studies at the Pennsylvania State University in April 1995. Paolo Squatriti substantially revises our understanding of the place of water mill technology in early medieval Italy. Richard Holt's essay offers a comprehensive overview of the impact of mechanization on the medieval English economy. Sergio Sanabria’s ongoing meticulous survey of the cathedral of Metz has thus far yielded valuable results concerning the structure of one of Europe’s largest Gothic churches. The contribution by Lynn Courtenay on large-scale timber work of the High Middle Ages combines a short introduction to medieval timber construction practices with a close look at major examples of three different types of building and of carpentry assembly from the thirteenth century. Paolo Squatriti substantially revises our understanding of the place of water mill technology in early medieval Italy.
