ABSTRACT
By the fall of 2004, two foreign leaders had publicly expressed their hopes that George Bush would win the upcoming American election-the prime ministers of Israel and Japan. The Israeli preference is easy to understand, but Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi’s position is more difficult. This chapter seeks to explain his stance, and in doing so, explain how Japan’s policy towards the Middle East is tied to its relations with the United States.
