ABSTRACT
This article deals with the current situation and development trends in Latvia, the Riga metro region and the city of Riga, as well as with issues regarding the development of the planning system. Special attention is devoted to the description of the challenges of the demographic, economic and social situation and changes in the urban environment during the period after regaining Latvia’s independence.
