ABSTRACT

In spring 2003, a PhD course entitled ‘Future Sustainable Transport’ was held for European students working in the field of transport studies. During a lecture I asked them to make a list of priorities relating to their main aims in studying transport. The main theme was clear: to develop knowledge so as to support changes in the transport system in a more acceptable and sustainable direction, both in societal as well as environmental terms. Of course, it was also to produce good science within their disciplines, a main aim of a PhD thesis. But making changes in the field of transport was their main concern.
