ABSTRACT

One should be cautious when social scientists speak about epoch-making social change, because they tend to overstate it. One reason for this might be that fundamental change is a better subject for social research than stable situations. Maybe it is just that normal times are simply boring compared to those of rapid change. But having issued this warning, I shall argue in this chapter that - with certain reservations - within established capitalist societies, epoch-making social change is indeed currently taking place.
