ABSTRACT

Quality criteria are presented for each of about 30 different outside-world image features of computer-generated image systems on vehicle simulators (e.g., airplane, tank, ship). Criteria derived are based on a literature review. In addition to purely physical properties related to image presentation (e.g., field size, contrast ratio, update frequency), attention is paid to image content (e.g., number of polygons, surface treatments, moving objects) and various other features (e.g., electrooptical aids, vehicle-terrain interactions, modeling tools, instruction tools). Included in this paper are an introduction on visual perception, separate discussions of each image feature including terminology definitions, and suggestions for further research.
