ABSTRACT

This chapter represents a series of research areas from a number of maritime sectors and topics. It examines the changing relationship between the European Union and the countries of Eastern Europe, in the field of shipping policy. The chapter presents a unique and highly topical view of the ferry feeder sector and the development of a new model approach to its interpretation and prediction. It examines the development of Polish ferry ports in the Baltic Sea region and in particular the specific facilities available in each, and new proposals put forward for their improvement, concentrating upon the provision of new road facilities. The chapter illustrates the major effects that East European economic and political changes have had upon a particular sector of Poland's shipping industry-the passenger ferry sector. It looks at the history of Polish motorway construction and the current plans for development in the coming years, with particular reference to the relationship between the A1 motorway.
