ABSTRACT

Needless to say, this is not a scientific account. There is plenty here to justify the judgment of Père Delehaye and generations of other scholars. But it is obvious that some weighty historical and theological questions underlie this narrative, and peering into the connection between those underpinnings, the narrative, and the events themselves is one way to further our understanding of the way high and low culture interacted in Late Antiquity. It also is a way to develop a tiny bit more respect for the popular mentality of the period.
