ABSTRACT

Mary has been held out to Christians as a model of the feminine. Jesus not only reminds us insistently that the female human being is God's daughter as much as the male is God's son. He not only incorporates this daughter of his into his church. He not only values her pedagogy highly enough to summon the people of God to hear her word and experience her prophetic role of proclamation. Luke 1:26–33 teaches us that the humility of Mary consists in the daring to accept the monumental undertaking proposed to her by God. Mary is blessed because she bears and communicates life even though she knows the suffering her son will undergo in pursuit of the liberation of his people.
