ABSTRACT

The variety of themes and problems which emerge from the substantive chapters of the book reflects the current scope and level of complication of the regional matter, and an attempt to draw out one definite and final conclusion from this series of studies is rather ‘mission impossible’. But then the aspiration to organize and classify the variety of the real world is always a dangerous temptation, and our concluding remarks are merely an attempt to identify some common lines of interpretation and major areas of contestation.
