ABSTRACT

The Business Integrity Systems Assessment (BISA) was undertaken by RMIT School of Management as part of the Australian National Integrity Systems Assessment (NISA). The primary aim of this project was to identify, analyse and record the institutions, laws, procedures, practices and attitudes in Australia that raise business standards (including increasing transparency and accountability) and inhibit corruption (the ‘integrity system’) with a view to:

assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the present Australian integrity • system and recommending improvements; identifying areas of potential risk from which corruption might develop;• surveying attitudes to the extent and nature of corruption in Australia and • to the effectiveness of its integrity system; identifying the ways in which elements of the integrity system interrelate and • any gaps or overlaps between them; providing a benchmark for comparison between jurisdictions and against • which changes in the effectiveness of the integrity system can be measured; providing a basis for action by relevant Australian governmental and non-• governmental agencies and organizations including Transparency International Australia; and providing examples and case studies for other countries both developed and • developing.
