ABSTRACT
Engineering in Europe took some time to re-establish itself after the fall of the Roman Empire. Civil engineering practice, other than in the construction of buildings and bridges, was probably in greatest demand in the field of hydraulic engineering. The Frisians have long been the most influential group in this field, with their work in protecting the north of Holland from floods dating back to the ninth century.
