ABSTRACT
On 1 November 1991 Lu Gang, a Chinese student in the USA. committed a tragic multiple murder. Just after gaining his PhD degree in physics from the University of Iowa he shot dead three professors, a Chinese student, Ms Shan Linhua, who had gained her doctorate at the same time as him, and Professor Anne Cleary, Vice President of the university and one of its most respected members. Long ago her father had gone to China as a missionary, so Amie was in fact born in Shanghai. An unmarried woman, she had a special love for the Chinese. She treated the Chinese students as her own children and gave them meticulous care and attention. On each Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve she invited Chinese students to her family home. Pitifully, she was shot dead by a Chinese student.
