ABSTRACT

Alexander Nehamas describes the formulation of Nietzsche’s imperative call, Become the one you are-Werde, der Du bist-as “the most haunting of Nietzsche’s haunting aphorisms”.1 Haunting and inspirational, this is the consequence of its aphoristic construction, its meaning is also conceptually dissonant. Here I identify it as an imperative but what kind? Isn’t it more of a platitude? A rather obviously circular reflection?
