ABSTRACT

Pulling the Sea Island Summit toward high performance were intensifying energy and terrorist shocks that reminded America and its allies of their common vulnerability, and the failure of the UN or US alone in response. America adjusted to make the Sea Island Summit one of substantial achievement on poverty reduction in Africa, the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), regional security, and the world economy. As Sea Island approached, several powerful outside pressures pulled the G8 leaders toward making their summit a success. As it unfolded from 8 to 10 June, Sea Island proved to be a summit of substantial achievement for its many accomplishments across the broad array of issues it had come to include. The Summit further specified twelve ‘remit mandates’ for reports to be submitted to the 2005 Gleneagles Summit or for work to be completed by then.
