ABSTRACT
More than 70 per cent of the earth’s surface consists of water. Consequently, a significant part of the physical transport of people and goods uses waterways, such as deep-sea shipping, short-sea shipping or inland navigation. Water is apparently not only something that separates areas, but also connects areas. For example, the Mediterranean is historically a water surface that was essential for the integration of the regions around it.
