ABSTRACT

The Olympiad was an excellent context to show the rest of the world what a prosperous, powerful, modem, safe and civilised country Germany was. According to Barsam, Olympia was to be considered as one of the most artistic documentaries ever created because of its interplay of thematic, psychological, mythological, narrative and visual interest which overcomes the limitations of the documentary film and the propaganda film genres. A form of censorship forbade films to contain anything that could harm German prestige or disturb public order, and direct propaganda was confined to the newsreels. Therefore, these were the first to be brought under complete control. The film is an account of the event, but its images, its commentary and its soundtrack are used to glorify the regime and its ideology. There are numerous shots and close-ups of Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders who follow the events with a lot of interest and enjoyment.
