ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the flow of silver in the Japanese-Korean trade, and will show quantitatively how this flow affected commerce between Korea and China and the monetary system in Japan. Tsushima-Korea trade took two forms: official trade, in which the Tsushima domain and the Korean government exchanged gifts and commodities of a kind and in amounts stipulated by the diplomatic provisions; and private trade, in which the Tsushima domain and merchants traded with the Korean officers and merchants at markets held 6 times monthly.
