ABSTRACT

Harrod’s librarian’s glossary defines collection management as ‘The organisation and maintenance of library stock, starting from collection development policies, keeping the needs of users a priority objective, and considering alternative means of document and information supply to supplement local holdings’.1 This means that the concept of collection management includes all the processes, from selection to conservation of library materials, to meet the needs of users within budgetary and other resource constraints. This chapter, therefore, considers these various elements that constitute collection management of local studies collections: establishing and implementing a collection development policy; collection review and evaluation; preservation and conservation.
