ABSTRACT

The most common enquiries from the public relate to family history, the history of a house, or an institution or the life of a famous or infamous person within the particular area. Students of all ages account for a significant proportion of enquiries and can be interested in families or buildings, but tend to have wider queries. Primary school children can be engaged in a study of their street, or trying to find out what it was like to be a Victorian child at school, or living in the workhouse. Older children will be studying to GCSE level work on a range of projects including both the world wars, suffragettes and the influence of particular groups on an area.
