ABSTRACT

The friendship between Germany and Ethiopia may be said to have begun with the German Hiob Ludolf of Frankfurt, the founder of Ethiopian studies in Europe at the end of the seventeenth century. All Ethiopicists agree about the date of Axumitic period which extends from the middle of the 4th to end of the 7th century and the two culminations of Axumitic empire, the reign of King 'Ezana in the second part of the 4th century and the reign of King Kaleb in the beginning of the 6th century. A argument which leads to the theological question of the monophysite foundation of Ethiopian Christology is the theological terminology of the Qerellos which differs in essential points from the terminology of "Haymanota Abaw", because the Cyrillian pieces stand in a different current of tradition from the Qerellos. The terminological considerations confirm the old hypothesis of the Ethiopicists that the Qerellos was translated in the Axumite period and indeed directly from Greek.
