ABSTRACT

Vuornese is a part of Saami. It is situated in southern Lapland, the greater part surrounding what is known today as the Frostvikens Saami village or in Saami Vuornese. A Saami village is a group of reindeer herders who work together in a limited area. It is impossible to say when the Saami people abandoned their old faith and became Christians. In the transition between old and new, the Saami did not always think well of burying the dead in the churchyard cemetery. When Christianity occupied Saami land many restrictions were introduced, including a prohibition on making sacrifices to the gods. In Subpme another sacrificial stone was believed to have been found. It is big with a strange shape, in the middle of an old Saami camp. Vuornese is a rich cultural place with a clear continuity of the Saami's life in the region.
