ABSTRACT

A crucial attendant challenge is keeping the approach to humanity and morality in kilter with the society in which the organisation operates; this helps secure legitimacy, which in turn is a pillar of authority. This is an ongoing process – one demanding continual monitoring of relevant developments and shifts within society and acute sensitivity to them. The best organisations are driven by peer pressure, rather than downward or imposed pressure. Through the deft handling of peer pressure it is possible to work on an organisation’s culture to enhance its overall governance. This is reinforced by the empowerment of its members, who feel able to comment on and influence its governance issues, and who consequently generate commitment to the organisation and its goals through a sense of ownership of them. There is no fundamental conflict between them: sustained success in the commercial world is not possible without humanity and morality being core elements of an organisation’s strategy.
