ABSTRACT

Because of new possibilities in human biotechnology, different convictions often collide often in conflict situations. This is nothing out of the ordinary for a pluralistic society. Therefore, how these convictions are presented and how representatives of other opinions are treated is very significant. i would like to elucidate this with the example of ‘pre-implantation diagnosis’. After a brief description of the medical facts and various assessment options, i shall explain why consensus is not possible in this conflict, which means that we are dealing with a test case for tolerance. The description of a well-known viewpoint, which does not respect the other side, will serve as a counter-example to show what form a debate marked by respect and tolerance should take and, consequently, what might make socially workable compromises possible.
