ABSTRACT

The articles in this anthology originate from lectures that were presented during the international Wartburg Conference entitled, ‘Human Biotechnology as a Social Challenge’. The conference took place at the hotel in the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany from 6 to 8 May 2004 and was organized by the Thuringia Ministry for Science, Research and Art, under the direction of its former Minister, Prof. Dr Dagmar Schipanski; the Ethics Centre at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany, under the direction of prof. Dr Dr Nikolaus Knoepffler; the president of the German Research foundation (DfG), prof. Dr Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker; and Nobel prize winner, prof. Dr Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard.
