ABSTRACT

Models o f an oscillating universe arising out o f Big Bang cosmologies provide an intriguing example o f both the interaction between theistic perspectives and scientific cosmologies. These models also draw into sharp contrast the very different reception they have received, respectively, within the Christian and Islamic traditions. From the point of view of the Christian tradition there appears to be a clear instance in which the Islamic tradition can provide insights that serve to aid in overcoming difficulties traditionally associated with incorporating the possibility o f an oscillating universe into a Christian worldview. With this in mind, it must be made clear that the intention o f this paper is neither to argue for or against cosmological models of an oscillating universe. What is intended is the presentation o f a case study in theistic responses to theories arising out of modern scientific cosmology.
