ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to discuss many of the related themes inherent in a discourse about contemporary socio-cultural change associated with debates around postmodern theorizing. It looks at the way in which the fashion industry and more specifically the 'popular' fashion industry has been transformed through issues concerning the continuing commodification of high and popular culture. The chapter explains the changing nature of production and consumption within the realms of the fashion industry, and the destabilization of the boundaries between culture and the economy. It also explains the changing nature of the roles of those people working within the fashion industry; the designers themselves. The chapter focuses on the working practices of the pop fashion designers, manufacturers and retailers in relation to a new type of economy emerging in the pop fashion industry and to the cultural industries in general.
