ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the topics of family violence that are commonly discussed among professionals and academics in Greece, from a variety of social and other perspectives. Family violence is a complex scientific area and only limited data are available in this field in Greece. The exact degree to which family violence against women exists in Greek society is difficult to establish for a variety of reasons. Recognition of the magnitude of the problem in Greek society is a key step towards creating the organised agendas needed to deal with and combat the problem. The law 1329/1983 made certain amendments to the Greek Civil Code and in particular to the section of Family Law. Greece has only broad constitutional and legal protections for women and the various types of violence against women in the family do not constitute a separate offence under Greek criminal law.
