ABSTRACT

One of the most difficult of the ethical issues associated with scientific research for the military has to do with a researcher's decision whether to become involved in such research at all, and if so, whether to draw a line between research she is willing to do and research she is not willing to do for the military. The view suggested by the first principle can be called the "guns for hire" view of the social responsibilities of engineers because it suggests that engineers should make their skills available to whomever is willing to pay for them, presumably as long as the projects are within the law. Samuel Florman comes very close to adopting this view in "Moral Blueprints: On Regulating the Ethics of Engineers." In Controlling Technology: Ethics and the Responsible Engineer, Stephen Unger presents a model code of engineering ethics.
