ABSTRACT

It seems fair to say that as a contemporary text, Gregory’s Dialogues has been much undervalued.2 This lack of modern scholarly value may be attributed to its relative place in Gregory’s canon, but also, I think, to its episodic similitude, its formulaic quality. And, like many didactic texts, its historical relevance in the successive periods of its copying has yet to be interpreted and appreciated fully.
