ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates deviant trajectories in an effort to understand the development of adolescents or adults whose socialization is out of step with the established norms of society. The covariation of delinquent and drug addiction trajectories relies on a great convergence of risk and predicting factors. In examining deviant trajectories, people have to question the issue of convergence between criminal careers and drug-user careers during an individual's development. A longitudinal follow-up of a population group at the turning point between adolescence and adulthood can shed light on the dynamics between a deviant trajectory and a trajectory of economic, social, family, normative and cultural integration by youths. The total percentages of young people having committed acts hide the large disparities which exist between young male and female offenders. Early involvement in acts linked to drugs is significantly important for the young adult's later delinquent life.
