ABSTRACT
The HITITE project was initiated to develop an image-based thesaurus for the built heritage. Historically, thesauri have tended to be the preserve of specialists working within a given field and, as such, the terminology contained within them can often bewilder the interested lay person. This is particularly true of thesauri relating to the built and buried environment where one person’s tumulus is another person’s barrow.
